About Me
I worked in retail, insurance and the building industry before entering Reading University as a mature student. My work in these fields brought me into contact with people from all walks of life. As a therapist, I am very grateful for this experience. It has helped me enormously to understand and empathise with the very wide range of issues with which my clients present me.
At Reading University I studied Greek and Philosophy after which I undertook a PhD in Philosophy. I received my Doctorate in 1994. It might seem like a wide leap from those academic pursuits to the practical, hands-on world of modern hypnotherapy! But during my work in philosophy I had to deal with issues of perception, self-awareness, the nature of the world and our role within it. Above all, I became interested in the nature of consciousness. What is consciousness? Is it one simple state or are the many levels of consciousness? How does our level of consciousness affect our lives? These considerations led me, quite naturally, to consider the phenomenon of hypnosis.
Unfortunately, at the present time, anyone can set themselves up an a hypnotherapist with little or no adequate training. I was therefore determined to seek out the best and most thorough training which was on offer. I studied hypno-psychotherapy at the National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy and received my Diploma in 1997. The National College is a member of the UKCP, the European Association for Psychotherapy and the European Association for Hypno Psychotherapy. National College courses have Open University-specific credit ratings at each level of training and are accredited by the British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education. Since 1996 I have been a member of the National Register of Hypotherapists and Psychotherapists. I am registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) as a hypno-psychotherapist.
In addition to my therapy work I am an Associate Lecturer in Classics at the Open University in the South (Region 02). My interests include karate (Wado Ryu: 1st Kyu) and music. (I have taken up the violin, to the bemusement of my family and neighbours!) I am married with two daughters.
