SMOKING

DID YOU KNOW...?

Cigarette smoke contains some 4700 chemical ingredients, about 60 of which cause cancer - such as:

  1. Formaldehyde
  2. Vinyl chloride
  3. Arsenic
  4. Nickel
  5. Cadmium

Cigarettes also contain nicotine. This is a highly addictive poison which used to be used as an insecticide.

There are over 75 brands of cigarette available in the UK. They have three things in common:

  1. They're very expensive
  2. They taste disgusting
  3. They kill you

WHAT IS THE COST OF SMOKING?

Cigarettes cost, on average, £5.50 per packet of 20. Therefore a 20 a day habit will cost you:

  1. £38.50 per week
  2. £2002 per year
  3. £20,020 per decade

A 40 a day habit will cost:

  1. £77.00 per week
  2. £4004 per year
  3. £40, 040 per decade

Seems an awfully expensive way to commit suicide!

MOST IMPORTANTLY, WHAT IS THE COST OF SMOKING TO YOUR HEALTH?

Here are some of the diseases which smoking can either cause or exacerbate:

  1. Cancer of the lung, mouth, throat, larynx and oesophagus.
  2. Heart attack
  3. Heart disease
  4. Cardiovascular disease
  5. Circulatory problems
  6. High blood pressure
  7. Stroke
  8. Bronchitis
  9. Emphysema

And many more besides...

Smoking kills well over 120,000 people in the UK alone every year.
A smoker's life expectancy is decreased by 7 to 8 years.
Each cigarette shortens you life by 7 to 11 minutes.
They also make you smell bad and they turn your fingers and teeth yellow.

A FEW MORE ALARMING FACTS:

  1. More than 12 million people in the UK smoke. That is roughly 28% of men and roughly 25% of women.
  2. 450 children start smoking every day!
  3. In the UK, roughly 30% of 15 year olds smoke.

BUT I'VE BEEN SMOKING FOR YEARS. SURELY THERE'S NO POINT IN GIVING UP NOW?

Yes there is! Here are a few of the short-term benefits after that final cigarette.

  1. 20 mins. Blood pressure and pulse rate normalise
  2. 8 hours. Oxygen levels in the blood return to normal
  3. 24 hours. Carbon monoxide eliminated from the body.
  4. 48 hours. Nicotine eliminated from the body.
  5. 72 hours. Breathing becomes easier.
  6. 3 - 9 months: Lung function increases by up to 10%
  7. 5 years: Risk of heart attack falls to roughly half that of a smoker.

The first session is devoted to giving you the motivation you need to succeed and making you aware of the tremendous inner strength and power which we all have but which we so seldom use.
