Excess weight and obesity have become one of the major health risks of our time. With more adults out at work and often working long hours people look for quick solutions at mealtimes. Takeaways, fast food, processed food that is easy to prepare, snacking though the day - all these have contributed to what is now a major heath risk. Being overweight or obese can cause or contribute to the following conditions:

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM OVERWEIGHT?

Sometimes we can simply rely upon our commonsense to tell us whether we need to lose weight or not. But commonsense is not always reliable. Sometimes very underweight people are convinced that they are overweight. If you are in any doubt at all as to whether you should lose weight - consult an expert. Talk to your GP or consult an appropriately qualified dietician or nutritionist. Listen carefully to the advice you receive.

SO - I NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT. NOW WHAT?

Short-term weight loss is quite easy to achieve. You pick one of the many diets and products on the market which promise to work miracles almost immediately, you stick to the diet for a little while, you don't eat enough, you get grumpy, frustrated and irritated. You lose a bit of weight - but then what happens? You lose patience, say "to hell with it" and have a binge!

To diet in this way is not good for you and it is not good for your health.

BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF!

The first thing you need to do is to understand why you are overweight at this time.

What, exactly, is wrong with your present diet? Are you eating the wrong sorts of food? Too many takeaways or fast food perhaps? Too much eating between meals? Too much saturated fat and sugar? Not enough exercise?

It takes a lot of honesty and courage to understand what it is you're doing wrong, and what you're doing right. It takes a lot of courage to understand what you need to change and what you don't!

A LONG-TERM SOLUTION.

When you understand what it is you're doing wrong, then you can prepare to make changes. But they must be lasting changes. A few weeks on a trendy new diet is of no benefit to anybody - except the person selling the diet! Remember:

  1. It is better to make permanent small changes than short-term big changes.
  2. Make sure your diet is sufficient for your needs - you need to have enough nutrition.
  3. Make sure your diet is practical - not too fiddly to prepare or full of ingredients which are hard to obtain.
  4. Most importantly: always seek expert advice, either from your GP or from an appropriately qualified dietician.
